'Grimm': Bree Turner adds foxy element to series

bree-turner-getty.jpgOooh! Foxy lady! "Grimm" has added actress Bree Turner as a recurring guest star in the haunted procedural.

EW.com is reporting that Turner will play Rosalee, a former drug addict who well on the road to recovery. Of course, it wouldn't be "Grimm" if there wasn't something different about her history. And it turns out that Rosalee comes from a long line of "Fuchsbau," which apparently is a fox-like creature. She is brought back to Portland after a family tragedy. But whose side is she on?

Turner is no stranger to creepy TV shows, having guest starred in "The Ghost Whisperer" and "Masters of Horror." More recently she appeared on "The Mentalist" and "Raising Hope."

The air date for her first episode, "Island of Dreams," has not yet been announced

Bree Turner at Holly Robinson Peete's Celebrity Luncheon at Fig & Olive

Holly Robinson Peete is one hell of a star mommy. The actress and wife to former NFL pro Rodney Peete is mother to four children and president of HollyRod foundation, an organization in support of families living with autism and Parkinson’s Disease. Yesterday we were invited to attend a celebrity luncheon hosted by Michael’s, the craft store, at Fig and Olive restaurant on Melrose. Michael’s has made contributions to HollyRod and wants to encourage parents in LA to take advantage of, ‘The Knack‘, free family crafting events for kids and their parents. Now parents can go right to the Michael’s site and find nifty art project videos to try with their kids. Holly’s daughter Ryan was there to explain the contents of my Michael’s goody bag; items she and her mother use often.

    Bree Turner
A host of other celeb mommies attended the event in support of Holly’s foundation including former Miss America and Doritoes girl, Ali Landry. Man, is she a beauty. Bree Turner was there in all smiles and we discussed the impressive independence of her 13 month old daughter. Piccolo Founder and chef Tina Fanelli Moraccini also stepped away from the kitchen to have lunch and tell me about her organization which leads the way in helping parents and kids prepare healthy meals for their families. Speaking of meals, my F&O salmon and fig dish was delectable and actress Robin Lee and I talked about her new movie over a glass of Rose’. These star mommies had one thing in common: ENERGY. They were all in between classroom pickups and planning outdoor camping trips or schooling. It’s good to see women who don’t let their hauteness get in the way of being an engaging mom.

Pilates in Pregnancy with Bree Turner

Like prenatal yoga, Pilates can help you connect with your body during pregnancy—and reduce your aches and pains. A system of strengthening and stretching exercises created nearly 100 years ago, Pilates is a complete workout that concentrates on your “powerhouse”—the stomach, hips, lower back, and buttocks—where your body needs to be strongest to support a growing baby and maintain good posture. Pilates also improves flexibility and tones the pelvic floor, helping you stay fit and get ready to give birth. Check out these great Pilates stretches for pregnancy, demonstrated by actress Bree Turner.

*As with any exercise program, check with your care provider before you begin.

    A bit about Bree
On her pregnancy style: I always pictured myself [pregnant] in big muumuus and tent dresses as some big earth mama. But I put those things on and they just made me feel fat, not pregnant and sexy. So I decided that more form-fitting things make me feel better.

On pressure to bounce back: I want to give myself some time. With what I do for a living and for as long as I’ve been doing it—what a break it is for me to just be! I’m not Angelina Jolie, by any means, so I don’t have people chasing me in cars, but when pictures are taken of me on the street, I just think, Thank God I brushed my hair today!

On the media’s skinny-mom obsession: I see pictures of so-and-so 4 weeks after having the baby and she’s already size 0 and it’s like Whoa! It’s a little crazy-making for me, so I try to curb my intake of all that.

    PIRIFORMIS STRETCH
A stretch to release the pyramid-shaped muscle in your pelvis that gets tight during pregnancy, this also eases lower back pain.

    1. Lying on your back, propping your upper body with pillows if it’s more comfortable, bend your knees and place your feet on the floor hip-width apart. 2. Lift your right knee and place your ankle on your left thigh, just above your left knee. 3. Take your right hand and press gently on your right thigh. Breathe and hold for 20–30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.

    STRADDLE STRETCH

This exercise is an inner-thigh stretch and hip opener—very important for pregnant women!

Sit facing a wall with your legs wide and extend your heels to the wall. Place your hands on the floor behind your hips and elongate the spine vertically and exhale. Keep your knees and toes facing upward as you stretch your legs sideways.

    SPINE STRETCH FORWARD
This is a wonderful way to lift and tone the pelvic floor, again, as well as stretch the spine, lower back, and shoulders.

    1. Open your legs wide enough to accommodate your belly. Place an exercise ball between them and rest your hands on it. Sit up straight, on the very top of your sit bones, and draw your shoulder blades down your back. 2. Exhale as you engage your abdominals and reach forward, rolling the ball away from you and stretching your spine. Then, inhale and draw your shoulder blades down your back as you roll back up, lining up the spine over the hips. Repeat 4–8 times.

    BIRD DOG
This safely strengthens the core and back muscles without you having to lie on your belly. It challenges your balance and builds strength in the buttocks, legs, arms, and shoulders.

    1. Kneel on the floor with your hands shoulder-width apart and your knees hip-width apart. 2. Engage your abdominals and exhale as you lift the right hand and extend the left leg. Inhale, return the arm and leg back to the floor, and repeat with the opposite limbs. Repeat 4–8 times.

    ANGELS IN THE SNOW

Use this exercise to relax the spine, stretch the muscles in your chest, and realign the bones around your chest and shoulders.

Lie on your back with a foam roller under your spine, supporting you from head to tail. Place your feet a little wider than hip distance and your arms down at your sides. Pull your shoulder blades down as you drag your arms slowly up along the floor, breathing deeply. Pause as you open your arms to a T shape. Then, keeping your arms heavy, move them over your head by your ears. Continue breathing as you return your arms back to your side. Repeat 3–5 times.

    BRIDGING
Strengthen your buttocks and the muscles on the backs of your thighs.

Lie on your back, propping your upper body with pillows if it’s more comfortable. Bend your knees and place your feet on the floor, hip-width apart. Place your arms by your sides. Exhale and scoop your belly by pulling your navel towards your spine. Inhale and press your hips up. Exhale, keeping your belly scooped, and roll down one vertebra at a time. Repeat 4–8 times.

“I want to give myself some time. With what I do for a living and for as long as I’ve been doing it — what a break it is for me to just be!” the Ugly Truth actress, 33, admits in Pregnancy‘s June issue.

“I see pictures of so-and-so four weeks after having the baby and she’s already size zero and it’s like, ‘Whoa!’”

Having experimented with her pregnancy style, Turner initially envisioned herself in loose dresses and tunics, but after a few fittings was quickly turned off.

Bree Turner: I've Had A "Smooth & Joyous Pregnancy"

The Ugly Truth star Bree Turner is set to welcome her first child in early July. The radiant mom-to-be told Celebrity Baby Scoop that she's expecting a girl and also opened up about her researched and pressure-free birth plan, and her interesting book choices on hypnobirthing and pregnancy meditations.

CBS: How has your pregnancy been?

BT: "I have had such a smooth and joyous pregnancy. I feel very lucky."

CBS: Are you excited to become a mom? Have you always wanted children?

BT: "More than anything in the world!"

CBS: Do you know the gender? Do you have any names picked out?

BT: "We're having a little girl. We haven't decided on a name yet. we have a short list and want to wait until we see her."

CBS: Do you have a birth plan?

BT: "My birth plan is to stay calm and flexible. I'm hoping to deliver naturally, but am not going to melt down if I'm not able to."

BT: "I'm a big reader and researcher. I've been reading What to Expect when You're Expecting, Hypnobirthing, Meditations for Pregnancy and The Happiest Baby on the Block. Once the baby is here, I plan on breastfeeding and we will have her in a small bassinet in our bedroom for as long as she needs."

CBS: Your hubby, Justin Saliman, is an orthopaedic surgeon. How did you 2 meet?

BT: "We met on fourth of July 2005 in the Hamptons at a club (romantic, I know!). I was taken by his confidence and incredible smile. Being that he lived in NYC at the time, we didn't have our first date until two months later. We were inseparable from that moment on."

CBS: You starred in The Ugly Truth with Katherine Heigl. Had she adopted baby Naleigh at that point?

BT: "Katie had not adopted her little girl at that point yet. Although, she was very open about her interest in adoption It was very important to her personally. CBS: Who are you hoping to work with in the future? Will we see you in more movies, or would you like to do TV?

BT: "I love movies. I love TV. I love theater. Great work is great work no matter the medium. I would love to work with JJ Abrams. He seems to have an unabashed delight for what he does. I also would love to work with Judd Apatow again. I did a TV pilot for him many years ago. I fell in love with his process and joy of the work.

To me, both of these men simply love what they do, want to work with people who love what they do, and create entertainment that is pure, exciting and filled with humanity. These are the kinds of people I love to collaborate with."

CBS: If you are working on any other projects or with any charities, please feel free to discuss.

BT: "I work closely with the Art of Elysium which provides creative outlets to young children who are battling serious medical conditions.

I also work with the Young Storytellers Foundations with targets LA public schools that have little or no access to the arts. For 8 weeks, Young Storyteller mentors come together to support and encourage the sutdents to imagine and create their own short screenplay that will ultimately be performed by professional actors at a 'big show.'

I'm also deeply dedicated to the Phase One Foundation with supports Phase 1 clinical research and treatment programs for patients with cancer. I lost a dear friend to brain cancer last year. This organization helped support the clinical trials that gave him an extra 7 years of life when doctors only granted him 6 months."

  • Bree Turner Sheds Light on the Small Stuff

    December 19, 2009

Bree Turner Sheds Light on the Small Stuff

    2009_12_15_bree_turner

Bree Turner is taking it one day at a time. The dancer turned actress, who co-starred with Katherine Heigl in this summer’s rom-com The Ugly Truth, has resolved to make her lifestyle a little greener, day by day. Sometimes that means switching out her incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescents; sometimes that means heading to Malibu to help the good folks from the Surfrider Foundation clean up the beach. And sometimes, Turner does the Los Angeles unthinkable: She walks. Here, she talks to us about her sustainable style.

You grew up in the Bay Area. People always think about that part of the country as being really progressive on the environment; was eco-consciousness something you grew up with?

God, not at all. My upbringing was very typically all-American. We ate fast food, we went to Costco. And I have three brothers, so for my parents, it was all about, how do we feed our family? The environment wasn’t on my radar at all. I mean, it’s not like I was out clubbing baby seals and burning tires, but…. [Laughs.] Now, finding ways to reduce my carbon footprint, that’s part of my day, everyday. I figure I can take one action each day to be more carbon-conscious. And even if it’s a small thing, it’s still relevant.

What are some of the changes you’ve made?

It can be as simple as, today, every time I walk out of a room, I’m going to make sure I turn off the lights. I’ve switched the bulbs out in my house, I’m eating more locally grown foods, I’m driving less. In L.A., that can be hard, cutting down on the driving. But there are bonuses to walking. Like, if I walk to the market, I’m getting exercise and fresh air, and I’m meeting my neighbors. I feel like I’m part of a community when I walk.

Have you noticed other bonuses to living more sustainably?

Absolutely. If you’re turning off the lights, you save money on electricity. If you eat fresher food, you feel better. And the food tastes better—I taste the difference now. I think that a lot of these choices make for a nicer lifestyle, really.

I know you’re involved with the Surfrider Foundation, which works to conserve the ocean and the beaches. How did you get interested in that cause?

This sounds kind of silly, but honestly, I saw a bunch of bumper stickers. Bumper stickers—they work! I was curious, so I went online and looked up Surfrider, and what really appealed to me was the fact that it was this local startup launched by a few surfers in Malibu, and initially, it served the beaches I actually go to. I’ve been involved for, I guess, five or six years; now Surfrider is global. And that’s great, but it was the local-ness that made what they were doing so meaningful to me. I started out donating money, but then I decided I really wanted to donate my time, too—they really need manpower. So when I can, I go to Malibu and do weekend beach clean-ups.

What’s your biggest challenge, in terms of "going green?"

Well, sticking to the little things, on the one hand, and on the other hand, not getting overwhelmed by the idea that I have to totally remake my life. I’m redoing my bathroom right now, for example, and I bought all green materials for the bathrooms, but then I see these brand new, all-green homes in the design magazines and I start to panic about the fact that I live in a 1974 condo with poor insulation. Not getting stressed out about all the thingsthat are out of your control and instead embracing the changes that you can make—that’s my biggest challenge. I have to keep reminding myself, the small stuff counts, too.

  • Bree Turner Interviews With Marta Walsh

    December 18, 2009

Bree Turner Interviews With Marta Walsh

Bree Turner is an actress who began her journey in Hollywood as a professional dancer. Bree was a background dancer in such hit films as The Big Lebowski (1998), She’s All That (1999) and Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). Bree’s love for performing and being on stage makes acting a natural transition. Most recently, Bree Turner can be seen opposite Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth.

I caught up with Bree Turner via telephone from Los Angeles early in the morning few months ago, to talk about her beginnings in Hollywood, her role film The Ugly Truth opposite Katherine Heigl, future career plans and even some beauty secrets!

    Actress Bree Turner

Marta Walsh: How did you decide on a career in acting, and what were some of your first breaks as an actress?
Bree Turner: I started out as a dancer which got me on stage. I was pretty shy as a kid so my mom decided to enroll me in a dance class, and I fell in love with being on stage and performing. I danced all through my teens and early 20’s. Dancing brought me down to Los Angeles with a dance scholarship in UCLA. I heard that you can actually make money as dancer, so I got a dance agent and began working in commercials, music videos, and the Grammys. I did that for about 6 years. I then decided to pursue acting. I was so in love with being on set and movie making. I loved movies since I was a baby. It was the only thing that would calm me down. I was very colicky as a child so my mom would take me to watch movies. Grease was the movie that would stop me from crying. Dancing, performing, and being on stage is all I’ve done forever, it’s all I really know.

MW: Tell us about your dancing roles in The Big Lebowski (1999) and Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged ME (1999)?
BT: The Big Lebowski was very cool, and I love that I’m in it, it’s one of my favorite movies. But the experience was torture because as one of the bowling pin girls on the set I had to wear a 2 and half foot high bowling pin head dress made out of heavy wood. It had to be secured on our heads. It would squeeze our brains it was so tight. The other dancers with me on the set and I couldn’t take the head dresses off because they were such pain to put back on. By the end of the shoot no one was talking to each other, we just sat there with our heads between our legs. Our costume weighted about 50 pounds, we couldn’t’t even go to the bathroom. It was hysterical and not glamorous at all. Being on Austin Powers film was the opposite experience. We were shooting in a secret mansion in Malibu, 76 degrees outside, blue skies, and we just hang out all day. Only my arm with a tennis racket ended up on screen and you can’t even see me. So sad!

MW: How would you describe your character in The Ugly Truth film with Katherine Heigl?
BT: I play Joy, Katherine Heigl’s best friend and co-worker. Katherine Heigl’s character in The Ugly Truth, Abby Richter, is a Type A, very professional, workaholic, and uptight with her love life. She even schedules her dates. She meets Gerard Butler, Mike Alexander, who is a bad boy. I’m the voice of reason for her, I push her when she needs to get out of her comfort zone. I’m there for her when she is complaining. It is a sparkly and fun romantic comedy that is actually honest and not manipulative. The relationships in the film are not forced. It was an easy relationship for me on screen and it was therefore super fun. It was a sweet bubbly role and I had good time doing it!

MW: What was it like working with Katherine Heigl and everyone on the set?
BT: It couldn’t be an easier experience. It was effortless. It truly didn’t feel like we were working

MW: Which other Hollywood actors/actresses inspire you with your own acting?
BT: Katharine Hepburn was phenomenal, I would have loved to work with her. She was such a force, competing with all the boys of her time. She was quick and witty with her on screen persona. Philadelphia Story (1940) is one of my all time favorite romantic comedies. Diane Keaton and Debra Winger are delightful and deliciously humane on film and unexpected with their choices. Kate Winslet is timeless and a chameleon, she can play any age and any era. I deeply respect her talent. Kate Hudson is the cutest and makes me laugh.

MW: If you ever won an Oscar, who would be some of the people you would thank?
BT: My aunt Shelly who has been with me since day one of my career, she is a great support for me. My family, they never pressured me to get a ‘real job’ when times I wasn’t’t working. They are my support system since I was little girl. And my husband.

MW: What is next for Bree Turner?
BT: I’m in a middle of shooting a Cinfu movie. I always wanted to do an action film. My dream scene is a slow motion shot of me with a huge ridicules gun and a bikini walking towards the camera. Who doesn’t want that slow motion moment of them as a bad ass?

MW: Was it tough being photographed for Maxim?
BT: It was challenging at first but then I’ve loosened up and we actually had a really good time. I have a hard time standing still in front of the camera, so I’m not sure I’m best as a model. It is very unnatural for me to hold a pose. Then you get a bit conscious about your body parts. Having an adorable 20 something woman photographer by the name of Kelly Stewart helped! That definitely relaxed me, I thought as a woman she knew which were the right poses for me.

    Bree Turner About Beauty

I keep my hair beautiful thanks to…Kerastase Chroma Protect it gives my hair texture, and prevents by blonde hair from turning brassy.

My favorite skincare products are…When I’m feeling super fancy I like to use skincare products from 3LAB. They have this cream that changed my skin! It’s called WW Cream, it’s expensive but I justify my purchase because it lasts me a long time. It totally minimized my pores, it gives a porcelain look to it, it’s amazing. I also love Neutrogena and their Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover. It’s the best! I also like Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads, ideal when you travel. It doesn’t’t leave any icky residue or greasiness.

I get my eyelashes looking long, full, and sexy using…Whatever packaging looks good, I’ll go with that, but right now I’m using Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Mascaras. You can buy them at the Victoria’s Secret store and they are only $5 for 4 mascaras. They come in different cool shades like navy, purple, and green, and black.

The best lip-gloss I ever owned…I love  Lip Gloss because it tastes like caramel and it stays on for long time. It’s kind of sticky but I like it. If you want to wear a lip gloss you can’t be afraid that it’s sticky!

My signature fragrance is…Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, it was given to me as a gift. At first I did’t like it that much. I’m a floral fruity type of fragrance girl and this one is woodsy. Then I start wearing it, and now I’m addicted to it! In high school I used to wear Jessica McClintock.

The one beauty product you will always find in my makeup bag is…Aquaphor Healing Ointment Advanced Therapy which I like to use underneath my lipstick, because I’ve developed some kind of lipstick allergy.

My number one beauty secret is…My beauty mantra is look like I’m not wearing makeup or the the no makeup makeup look. I also really love smoky eyes. I use MAC Eye Kohl Liner in Teddy which is a red brown shade with a bit of a sparkle. I apply it in the inner rim of my eyes, they immediately pop out yet look very natural. And my indulgent is getting my hair professionally blown out once a week. I feel a bit like a 50’s housewife, but it really lasts especially with a dry shampoo. To keep the blow out last, at night I put my hair in a scratchy. When I take it down in the morning and my hair has this great wave to it. This rally changed my life, lol.

I keep fit thanks to…I work out, I’m not going to lie. I eat small portions. My weakness is candy like Gummy Bears in sour watermelon. I purposely don’t buy things that I’m going to binge on. My husband is not pleased because there is never anything interesting to eat in my kitchen. I also try to do something active everyday like go to the gym, a dance class, walk, and I take the stairs instead of the elevator.

The city I love the most…New York City! I have a person inside me that would love to live in New York. I would love to do a show there for six months, rent a flat, and live the New York City lifestyle. Los Angeles will always remain our home base because it’s so easy to live here, the weather, the ocean, and the mountains. But there is energy to New York City that nowhere else in the world has.

One or two things some people may not know about Bree Turner…I’m really good at video games, and like to stay up late watching TV. Like the other day, I watched Big Love until 4am!

H - You recently came out with the new movie The Ugly Truth, how did you like playing the role of Joy?
Bree - I basically went to set every day and had fun. My manta was to stay loose and spontaneous. It was a relaxing character to play!

H - How was your experience working on set with Katherine and Gerard?
Bree -  Katie is easy, positive, and has a nice, raunchy sense of humor. She's my kind of gal. Gerry is charming and lovable. You can't help but swoon over that guy.

USA Weekend: The Who's Who Blog

Heigl's co-star Bree Turner tells the 'truth'

I love Gerard Butler. I kinda like Katherine Heigl, in spite of what seems like arrogance vis a vis Grey's Anatomy. So I am curious about their new movie, The Ugly Truth, opening tomorrow and I asked our Steve Thompson to chat up Bree Turner, the actress who plays Heigl's best friend.

Heigl and Butler have been promoting the movie this week so by now, you may have seen Heigl’s restaurant orgasm scene (if not, watch the clip here). But co-star Turner assures us that the film itself is a more natural battle of the sexes comedy than we’ve seen before. “It’s not one of these ridiculous high-concept things. It’s really two opposite people in a workspace having to get along, and an organic relationship develops from there.” Turner talks more about working with Heigl and Butler, her switch from dancing to acting, and going back to college.

    The Verge: Bree Turner

There’s a certain art to playing the best friend in a romantic comedy, and Bree Turner has inhabited enough of them to prompt comparisons to the master, Judy Greer. “That’s a huge compliment,” Turner says. “I love Judy.” Now, as she prepares for her highest-profile second banana yet — Katherine Heigl’s BFF in The Ugly Truth — we talked to Turner about being an onscreen bestie and the wild screen credits that led her there.

So what makes a good romantic comedy best friend?
I’ve done a couple of them, and I think they’re really fun. [The Ugly Truth] is a little unique: It hits all the points that you have to hit in a romantic comedy, but because it’s an R-rated film, there’s some raunchy humor. It’s definitely adult, for sure, and the movie doesn’t treat the audience like children. But I think with these [best friend] roles, I enjoy them because I like supporting the main character. You have a lot more freedom when you’re the sidekick — you can bring a lot more of your own flavor to the role, and you can get away with a lot more.

    Dancing Queen

Former dancer Bree Turner has traded in her boogie shoes for the big screen.

BREE TURNER WILL NEVER LET FAME GO TO HER HEAD. Never ever. Not even if she becomes Angelina Jolie–level famous and has a mantel full of Oscars and throngs of adoring fans. Because she knows what it’s like to be the low man on the totem pole. See, Turner got her start in film as a dancer in movies like The Big Lebowski and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and let’s just say that she and her fellow dancers were less than spoiled while on the set. “You were lucky if you got some water,” Turner remembers with a laugh.

    Inked Magazine

Bree Turner talks to Inked magazine about her four tattoos: Her first was an abstract figure of a dancer on her ankle that she got when she was 16. "My mom and grandma said I could have it but they had to go with me," Bree says. "I was mortified." She got her second tattoo on her hip while she was in college.  The third "is a butterfly on my lower back. It sounds cliché now, but in 1997 it was a head of the curve."   Her last tattoo is the initials of everyone in her family on her Achilles heel.
