USA Weekend: The Who's Who Blog

Heigl's co-star Bree Turner tells the 'truth'

I love Gerard Butler. I kinda like Katherine Heigl, in spite of what seems like arrogance vis a vis Grey's Anatomy. So I am curious about their new movie, The Ugly Truth, opening tomorrow and I asked our Steve Thompson to chat up Bree Turner, the actress who plays Heigl's best friend.

Heigl and Butler have been promoting the movie this week so by now, you may have seen Heigl’s restaurant orgasm scene (if not, watch the clip here). But co-star Turner assures us that the film itself is a more natural battle of the sexes comedy than we’ve seen before. “It’s not one of these ridiculous high-concept things. It’s really two opposite people in a workspace having to get along, and an organic relationship develops from there.” Turner talks more about working with Heigl and Butler, her switch from dancing to acting, and going back to college.

The Ugly TruthBree Turner’s role in The Ugly Truth isn’t unfamiliar territory. The actress is used to playing "the buddy,” as she puts it (see her role opposite Linsday Lohan in Just My Luck). But the 32-year-old dancer turned actor isn’t complaining. “Hey, it is what it is,” Turner says. “It’s fun, and easy, and you get to show up twice a week to set. It’s a very cush role.”

No wonder she’s so content. She didn't intend to act. After booking dancing gigs in commercials and movies, Turner stumbled into the profession when she was 19. It wasn’t until she was on the set of Dunston Checks In that Turner, a career dancer, thought she could pursue acting. “I had  loved movies my whole life, but I just did not make that connection that I could actually do what I love. And being on that set that day with the lighting and the wardrobe, and everyone was moving around and working together. It was that collaborative environment. I just love that.”

She said that same environment made filming The Ugly Truth “so fun and chill.”

But is the film satisfying to both sexes like it’s being pitched? “It really is. I went to a screening with my husband and he liked it just as much as I did,” says Turner, who’s been married to her orthopedic surgeon husband for almost a year. “Gerard really appeals to both men and women. He’s goofy, and sexy, and raunchy. And I think Katherine is the same type of star, who appeals to both sexes.”

Turner, a Grey’s Anatomy fan since season one, said Heigl, who’s been rumored to be a diva on set, was great to work with. “She’s fantastic in this and completely carries the entire film, and really just does a great job.”

Turner said she learned a lot from both Heigl and Butler, but the one-time UCLA student is now going back to school. “I did not get my degree and it’s actually something I really wanted to accomplish in my life.”

Turner enrolled as a full-time student at UCLA this summer.  But she hasn’t given up on acting, nor will she settle for endless sidekick roles.“There’s definitely more I can offer to this world besides being the second banana. But it’s been a stepping-stone for me, and I’ve been thankful. I needed to go through this chapter, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my career. But this has been a really fun one, so far.”
